Mutitu Factory: Excellence in Kenyan Coffee 
 
Established in 1963, Mutitu Factory lies on the southern slopes of Mount Kenya in Kirinyaga County, a region known for producing some of the world’s finest coffees. The factory serves 1,250 smallholder farmers, each cultivating about ½ acre with 200 coffee trees, alongside macadamia, beans, and corn.
 
Sustainable Practices 
 
To protect the environment, Mutitu Factory has wastewater soak pits and promotes tree planting among its members.
 
Coffee Processing 
 
Farmers handpick cherries and deliver them for water flotation sorting, where denser, high-quality beans are separated for processing. A double fermentation method—24-hour primary fermentation, 12-24-hour secondary fermentation, and soaking for up to 24 hours—enhances acidity and complex flavors. After washing, beans dry on raised tables for 6 hours initially, then for 5-10 days until fully dried. Once processed, the coffee rests in bodegas before export.
 
Market Access 
 
Traditionally sold via Kenya’s auction system, recent reforms now allow direct trade, enabling farmers to sell to specialty roasters worldwide. Mutitu Factory remains committed to producing exceptional, high-quality coffee while supporting its farmers and the environment.
